Taking advantage of these hormone packages can provide you with valuable insights into your health. These packages go beyond merely viewing hormone levels—they delve into how your body metabolises hormones and what pathways these crucial drivers are taking. This deeper understanding helps unlock a holistic picture of how hormones influence your overall well-being.
All three packages include a detailed health and nutrition plan which is based on your unique biology, life history, preferences and expert coaching, also the DUTCH (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) measures a range of hormones, metabolites, and organic acids to provide a comprehensive picture of your hormone status:
Let’s look at a typical client’s journey and how the DUTCH test supported her hormonal health:
Sleep dysregulation, hot sweats and weight gain around the midsection were my clients biggest hurdles. As the sleep was so disrupted then her daytime motivation for change was low. My client was spending the mornings longer in bed and then going to bed with a feeling of dread as to what the night would unfold. Here is what the DUTCH test was able to inform us and this is where we were able to make change
Her night time cortisol was elevated and her night time melatonin was low and this told me several things – she was going to bed in a state of what is known as ‘fight or flight’ where your body believes it is in imminent danger this raised cortisol level at night time can also lead to that all so common weight gain around the middle – the body does not cope well with elevated blood sugar at night time which occurs when your cortisol is elevated as your body is preparing itself to flee from danger – add the menopause and you have poorer blood sugar control…..this sandwich situation is also disrupting your leptin and ghrelin hormones and what do they do? Tell your body when to eat or when your full – in the case of dysregulation you may feel hungry all day – I have certainly experienced that after a poor nights sleep.
· Sex hormones
The DUTCH test measures oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol. It can show the balance between these and what their preferred pathways may be – enabling me as a consultant to implement nutritional and lifestyle change to support beneficial balance.
· Adrenal hormone metabolites
The DUTCH test measures cortisol, cortisone, creatinine, and DHEA-S. It can help guide how to best support your thyroid health and adrenal glands through nutrition and lifestyle
· Organic acids
The DUTCH test measures organic acids that can indicate nutritional deficiencies, imbalance in certain neurotransmitters which can impact mood, motivation and gut imbalances where support can optimise all relevant pathways
· Melatonin metabolites
The DUTCH test measures melatonin, which can help assess your circadian rhythm and sleep. Here dietary and lifestyle interventions can support you getting a good nights sleep.
· Stress
The DUTCH test includes a saliva test that can show how your body is coping with stress. With nutritional and lifestyle support the stress response can be balanced and this has a knock on effect to many of the typical hormonal symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue and high blood pressure.
Hormones are not just chemical messengers; they are the architects of our evolution, guiding us from puberty to old age. They shape our desires, influence our moods, fuel our motivations, and, ultimately, play a key role in the trajectory of our long-term health.
Why Consider Your Hormonal Health?
When we’re young, we often feel invincible. The changes associated with ageing seem so distant that it feels unnecessary to give them a second thought. However, as we age, the things we once took for granted, like effortless energy and good health, can start to shift. These changes lead many of us to think more deeply about what it means to live a healthy, fulfilling life—one with minimal discomfort and maximal happiness.
It’s not uncommon for this realisation to come from watching loved ones face health challenges. These moments spark a desire to invest in our well-being, to explore how we can live healthier and longer lives.
The Personal Journey to Longevity
"Living in good health" can mean different things to different people. As a nutritional consultant, I’ve seen first-hand how these goals are influenced by individual circumstances, lifestyle habits, and even societal pressures. Our relationship with food, the overwhelming flow of information (and misinformation), and the commercial interests driving modern wellness trends can cloud our judgment and complicate our health journeys.
That’s why my approach focuses on simplifying the complexity and emphasising the key areas that matter for longevity. Specifically, for this discussion, I’d like to focus on the relationship between hormonal changes during menopause and how understanding these shifts can guide you toward a life that’s not just long but filled with vitality, happiness, and health.
The Hormone-Metabolism Connection: Menopause and Longevity
Menopause is a pivotal hormonal transition that marks the end of ovarian function. This significant life stage brings profound changes that can impact overall health and ageing. Understanding these shifts can empower you to take control of your well-being.
1. What Happens to Your Hormones During Menopause?
Decline in Oestrogen and Progesterone
Menopause triggers a sharp decline in oestrogen and progesterone, hormones that play vital roles in regulating various bodily systems.Oestrogen’s Protective Role: It supports cardiovascular, skeletal, and neurological health. Its decline contributes to age-related risks, such as osteoporosis and heart disease.
Progesterone’s Role: Often known for its role in fertility, progesterone also helps balance other hormones, and its decline can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
2. The Domino Effect on Health
The loss of these hormones doesn’t just affect the reproductive system—it has a ripple effect across the entire body. It can influence:
Bone Health: The risk of osteoporosis increases as bones lose density.
Heart Health: The decline in oestrogen can lead to higher cardiovascular risks.
Cognitive Function: Many women notice changes in memory, focus, and mood due to hormonal fluctuations.
How Hormonal Insight Can Empower Longevity
Understanding how your hormones interact during menopause provides a blueprint for taking proactive steps toward better health. This knowledge can help you:
Optimise your diet to support bone and cardiovascular health.
Incorporate lifestyle adjustments, such as stress management and regular exercise, to counteract hormonal declines.
Work with healthcare professionals to explore options like supplements or hormone therapy, if necessary.
